Authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj have constituted special police teams to track down two undertrial inmates who escaped from the district jail at Anaugi on Sunday night.
Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said four teams have been deployed and raids are underway to apprehend the accused, identified as Ankit and Dimpy alias Shiva.
A case has been registered against the escapees under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Gursahaiganj police station following a complaint by jailer Ravindra Kumar Singh. The escape came to light during a routine headcount on Monday morning.
DIG Prisons Pradeep Gupta inspected the jail and said the inmates scaled the prison wall using a rope made from blankets and iron beams for support. CCTV footage is being examined to determine the security lapse.
Five jail officials, including the jailer and deputy jailer, have been suspended for alleged negligence, while staff on duty are being questioned.
