All students and teachers taken hostage during a shooting at a school in Hat Yai district of southern Thailand were safely freed on Wednesday evening, police confirmed.
Deputy Superintendent Wichian Soboon told Reuters that the gunman responsible for the attack has been detained following a swift security response.
The incident unfolded in Songkhla province, where an unidentified assailant opened fire on the school campus and held an unknown number of students and teachers hostage. Authorities quickly cordoned off the area and launched rescue operations.
While officials confirmed that several people were reported dead in the shooting, the exact number of casualties has not yet been disclosed.
The situation was brought under control within hours, with law enforcement securing the premises and ensuring the safe release of all hostages.
