IMC chief’s aide Afzal Beg surrenders before court in Bareilly case

Afzal Beg, the personal secretary of Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan and a wanted accused in the September 26 Bareilly violence case, surrendered before a local court on Wednesday, police said.

Beg, a resident of Viharipur in Civil Lines and a former IMC office-bearer, carried a reward of ₹15,000 for his arrest.

He appeared in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate accompanied by his lawyer and a few associates. The court has remanded him to jail, officials confirmed.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya, the reward was announced after Beg went missing following the communal clashes.

Kila police station in-charge Subhash Singh said that although police had prior information about his surrender and stationed a team outside the court, Beg managed to turn himself in quietly with legal assistance.

Beg is also wanted in another rioting case registered at Baradari police station, and police are likely to seek his custody for further interrogation.

Authorities said efforts are underway to obtain non-bailable warrants against other absconding accused, warning that reward amounts could be increased and property attachment proceedings initiated if they fail to appear.
