India, Brazil, South Africa criticise unilateral tariffs at IBSA meet

India, Brazil and South Africa have raised sharp concerns over the growing use of unilateral tariffs and coercive trade measures, warning that such steps could rattle global markets and create instability.

The remarks, seen as a veiled reference to Washington’s tariff disputes, came during a meeting of the IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) grouping.

The talks were attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and South African Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.

In a joint stand, the three countries said such “discriminatory” practices go against World Trade Organisation (WTO) norms and undermine the spirit of multilateralism.

The ministers stressed the importance of upholding a fair, rules-based global trading order and called for efforts to strengthen the WTO.

Their statement highlights growing unease among emerging economies over protectionist moves that, they argue, threaten both economic stability and development in the Global South.
