India has dispatched urgent relief assistance to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah devastated several parts of the island nation, killing at least 46 people and leaving 23 missing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences and announced India’s aid to the island nation.
The cyclone triggered massive landslides and flooding, with over 300 mm of rainfall recorded in just 24 hours, severely impacting the eastern and central regions.
According to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre, nearly 44,000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters, including those rescued from rooftops.
Acting under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India sent critical relief materials and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) support.
New Delhi said the aid reflects its Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, reaffirming solidarity with its closest maritime neighbour. India has also expressed readiness to provide further help as rescue efforts continue.
