Iran’s tit-for-tat move at EU after IRGC named ‘terror group’

Iran on Friday issued a sharp response to the European Union’s move to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, warning that it would list the armed forces of participating EU countries as “terrorist entities” in a tit-for-tat action.

Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said the decision followed a resolution passed by Iran’s parliament, adding that European nations supporting the move would bear its consequences.

His remarks were posted on social media platform X, signalling Tehran’s firm rejection of the EU’s stance.

The warning came after the European Union imposed fresh sanctions on senior Iranian officials, including Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad and presiding judge Iman Afshari.

The EU said the officials were sanctioned for their alleged roles in the violent suppression of protests and arbitrary arrests of activists and human rights defenders.

The developments come amid heightened regional tensions, with reports of a US missile destroyer docking at Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat and Iran announcing the induction of 1,000 new strategic drones, as strains between Tehran and Washington continue to escalate.
