MEA responds after Indian software engineer shot dead by police in California

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday confirmed that local authorities in the United States are investigating the death of Indian national Mohammed Nizamuddin, who was allegedly shot dead by police in California earlier this month following a scuffle with his roommate.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, addressing the media, said, “A shooting incident took place in which an Indian citizen lost his life. We are in touch with the local authorities and the government there.

As per our information, an investigation is underway, and the police have also issued a statement on the matter. We remain in contact with the family of the deceased.”

Nizamuddin, 30, hailed from Telangana’s Mahabubnagar and had moved to the US in 2016 for higher education.

After completing his MS at Florida College, he joined a software company and later relocated to California following a promotion.

His father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, said he was informed by his son’s friend that the incident occurred on September 3 after a petty dispute with a roommate.

The family has urged the central government to facilitate the repatriation of his mortal remains.
