Kaimur police have arrested a moneylender for allegedly harassing borrowers by charging exorbitant interest rates and resorting to intimidation.
Superintendent of Police Hari Mohan Shukla said the arrest followed a complaint by a Kudra resident who had borrowed ₹1.5 lakh in 2022 for his sister’s wedding and was allegedly forced to pay inflated interest.
According to police, despite repaying ₹56,000 and later offering the remaining amount, the accused demanded ₹5.27 lakh, assaulted the borrower and pressured him to sign blank papers.
Acting on the complaint, a special investigation team raided the accused’s house on Tuesday.
Police recovered 39 interest-related documents, 245 blank cheques, 65 blank stamp papers, 11 bank passbooks, diaries detailing 97 borrowers, 1.764 kg of silver and ₹1.7 lakh in cash.
The accused has been booked for cheating, extortion and assault, with provisions of the Usury Act to be added.
