Nepal’s political crisis deepened on Monday after Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak tendered his resignation during an emergency cabinet meeting convened at Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s official residence in Baluwatar.
Sources confirmed that Lekhak submitted his resignation directly to the Prime Minister, a move that comes amid mounting unrest across the country following the government’s controversial decision to ban major social media platforms.
This news came after Prime Minister Oli called an emergency meeting of the cabinet to address the spiraling violence that has left at least 19 people dead in nationwide clashes between protesters and security forces.
Demonstrators have targeted high-security installations, vandalised Parliament’s main gate, and even attacked Oli’s residence in Damak, prompting police to fire warning shots.
Lekhak’s resignation is seen as a significant blow to the government, raising further questions about its ability to restore order and respond to public outrage over the social media ban.
