“Never recognised Arunachal”: China’s sharp response after Indian woman reports travel ordeal

China’s Foreign Ministry has issued clarification on its actions after an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh was stopped for 18 hours while transiting through Shanghai.

While addressing a press conference, Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated Beijing’s longstanding claim stating that “Zangam is China’s territory” further adding that China has “never recognised the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally set up by India.”

Mao denied reports of detention or harassment, saying China’s border authorities carried out routine checks “in accordance with laws and regulations” and ensured the woman’s “lawful rights and interests were fully protected.”

She added that no compulsory measures were taken and that the airline provided the passenger with meals and resting facilities.

The incident prompted a diplomatic protest from India, after the woman allegedly faced difficulties due to her passport identifying Arunachal Pradesh as part of India.

China said any further details should be sought from “competent authorities.”
