Russia Kamchatka earthquake: 7.8 magnitude quake triggers tsunami warning

A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s eastern Kamchatka peninsula early Friday, triggering a tsunami warning and sending tremors through the region.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit about 128 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of 10 km. Russia’s state geophysical service estimated the tremor at magnitude 7.4 and confirmed at least five aftershocks.

Videos shared on Russian social media captured light fixtures and furniture shaking inside homes, while one clip showed a parked car swaying on the street.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center alerted residents of possible hazardous waves along nearby coastlines. Kamchatka governor Vladimir Solodov urged residents to remain calm, assuring there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Kamchatka peninsula, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences intense seismic activity. Early in July, an 8.8 magnitude mega-quake in the region triggered a tsunami that swept away part of a coastal village.

Authorities remain on alert as assessments of damage and potential risks continue.
