The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned to January 8 the hearing of a plea challenging the detention of jailed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA).
The petition has been filed by his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, who has termed the detention illegal and an arbitrary violation of Wangchuk’s fundamental rights.
A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P. B. Varale deferred the matter, which was earlier heard by Justices Aravind Kumar and N. V. Anjaria.
The case was last taken up on November 24, when the court granted time to the Centre and the Ladakh administration to respond to Angmo’s rejoinder.
Wangchuk was detained on September 26, two days after violent protests in Ladakh over demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status left four people dead and several injured.
The government has accused him of inciting the violence, an allegation denied by Wangchuk himself and also denied in the plea.
