Six people were killed on Saturday afternoon when a cargo ropeway trolley collapsed at the Shaktipeeth site on Pavagadh Hill in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district. Police said the mishap occurred around 3:30 pm after the trolley, used to carry construction material up the hill, fell from the fourth tower when its cables snapped.
Inspector General of Police, Godhra-Panchmahal range, Ravindra Asari confirmed the casualties, stating that the deceased included three local residents, two from Jammu and Kashmir, and one from Rajasthan.
The victims were identified as Annaji alias Bhairavlal Ratilal Jat from Rajasthan, ropeway operators Mohammed Anwar Mahmad Sharifkhan and Balvantsingh Dhaniram from Rajouri, Dilipsinh Narvatsingh Koli (temple security), Hiteshbhai Hasmukhbhai Baria (temple food service worker), and Sureshbhai Rayjibhai Koli (flower trader).
Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations, while the bodies were sent for postmortem. Officials said the passenger ropeway, used by pilgrims to the Kalika Mata Temple, had been suspended due to bad weather, though the goods ropeway remained operational.
