The Supreme Court on Monday signalled strict action against government employees feeding stray dogs within office premises, calling it a breach of its directions on designated feeding zones.
Hearing a suo motu case on rising dog-bite incidents, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria said it will soon issue orders specifically targeting government offices and public sector units encouraging such feeding practices.
The Supreme Court observed that despite repeated instructions, stray dog attacks continue to surge nationwide.Â
Chief secretaries from most states and Union territories appeared in court over delays in implementing Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules.
The bench also directed the Animal Welfare Board of India to assist in compiling a compliance checklist, and allowed dog-bite victims to join the proceedings without prior deposit, stressing the need to balance public safety with humane animal treatment.
