In a historic development, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is set to take oath as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister on Friday night, leading the Interim Government formed after weeks of deadly violence and political upheaval.
Sushila, a 73-year-old jurist, earlier made history as the first and only woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal, will be sworn in at 9 p.m.
Karki’s first cabinet meeting is expected to recommend the dissolution of Parliament, signaling a reset in Nepal’s fragile political order. She has been one of the frontrunners to lead the country as proposed by the Gen-Z leaders.
Her appointment comes at a time of deep instability, with ongoing protests claiming 51 lives and the resignation of top leaders leaving the nation in limbo.
As she assumes office, all eyes will be on Karki’s leadership to take out Nepal through one of its most turbulent chapters.
