Trump imposes $100,000 fee on H-1B Visa applications, Indians to bear the brunt

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring companies to pay $100,000 for every H-1B visa application. The order comes into effect on September 21, 2025, for one year with the possibility of extension.

The H-1B program, created in 1990, allows US firms to hire foreign professionals in specialized fields. With Indians making up over 70% of H-1B holders, the drastic price hike is expected to hit the Indian tech workforce the hardest.

Trump accused outsourcing firms of “systemic abuse” of the visa program and labeled it a national security threat. Officials said it aims to protect American jobs and reduce reliance on foreign workers.

Immigration lawyers warn the change could raise renewal costs,  limit job mobility, and discourage companies from sponsoring early-career professionals. Many fear this will push skilled talent toward countries like Canada and the UK.

The policy sparked sharp debate. While some US leaders back the restrictions to prioritize local workers, critics argue it will hurt innovation and global competitiveness. Legal experts also expect the proclamation to face challenges in court.

For Indian professionals in the US, the future of the H-1B visa remains uncertain.
