Union cabinet clears highway projects worth ₹20,668 crore

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared two major highway infrastructure projects worth ₹20,668 crore, underscoring the government’s push to boost connectivity, logistics efficiency and regional economic integration under its broader infrastructure expansion drive.

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the approvals are part of sustained investments aimed at improving mobility, reducing travel time and enhancing the quality of life for citizens, while strengthening India’s transport backbone.

Key projects approved:

  • Nashik–Solapur six-lane expressway (₹19,142 crore):
The largest build–operate–transfer (BOT) access-controlled expressway project will form a crucial link under the Viksit Bharat Golden Quadrilateral, connecting Mumbai and Chennai.
Designed for speeds of 100–120 kmph, the corridor will feature 27 major bridges, 164 minor bridges and a 5.6-km elevated viaduct. It is expected to reduce travel distance by 14% and cut travel time between Chennai and Surat by 45%, while improving connectivity between industrial hubs such as Ahilya Nagar and Dharashiv.
  • NH-326 widening in Odisha (₹1,526 crore):
The project aims to improve road connectivity in tribal-dominated and mineral-rich districts, supporting industries like aluminium production and emerging sectors such as speciality coffee.

Vaishnaw said the Cabinet has approved infrastructure projects worth ₹12.43 lakh crore since June 2024, reflecting a continued focus on highways, railways, metros and other high-impact capital investments.
