US chief negotiator to arrive in India as trade talks resume

Amid strained trade talks between New Delhi and Washington, USA’s chief trade negotiator for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch will arrive in New Delhi on Monday night to resume stalled discussions on a trade deal.

As an Assistant US Trade Representative, Lynch, is scheduled to meet commerce department special secretary Rajesh Agrawal on Tuesday, reported ANI citing government sources.

A US delegation was earlier expected between August 25 and 29, but it was abruptly called off after Washington imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods.

The duties included a 25 per cent levy in early August, followed by an additional 25 per cent “penalty” linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil, which the US argued was funding the Ukraine war.

Diplomatic tempers have since eased following renewed warmth between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, paving the way for talks to move forward.
