The US Embassy in Bangladesh on Friday issued a security alert warning of possible political violence and extremist attacks ahead of the country’s general elections and national referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026.
In the advisory, the embassy cautioned that election-related unrest could target political rallies, polling stations and religious sites. US citizens were advised to avoid demonstrations and exercise heightened caution near large gatherings, noting that even peaceful rallies can quickly turn violent.
The alert also mentioned government-imposed restrictions, including a ban on motorcycles on February 10 and suspension of all transport services on February 11 and 12. The US Embassy in Dhaka said it would operate with limited onsite services on the two days.
Citizens were urged to remain vigilant, keep a low profile, monitor local news and carry charged mobile phones for emergencies.
The February 12 polls will be Bangladesh’s first since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted following mass protests last year and later fled into exile.
