“Brighter smiles in every home”: PM Modi on GST reforms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the newly implemented GST reforms, calling them a step that will bring “brighter smiles in every home.”

The reforms, which came into effect on September 22, the first day of Navratri, mark a major overhaul of the indirect tax system.

Under the GST reforms, the earlier four-tier tax structure of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% has been simplified into a two-rate structure of 18% and 5%.

The government said this move would make GST more citizen-friendly and transparent, while also easing compliance for businesses.

Sharing newspaper coverage on X, Modi said the GST Bachat Utsav would reduce costs from “markets to households.”

In his Sunday address, he added that the rate changes, along with earlier income tax cuts, would help Indians save ₹2.5 lakh crore this year.

The GST reforms, he said, will benefit farmers, traders, entrepreneurs, women, and youth alike.
