In his first address to the United Nations General Assembly since beginning his second term as U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized the global body, calling it ineffective in dealing with conflicts.
Speaking before more than 150 world leaders and top UN officials, Trump said the organization had failed to live up to its “tremendous potential.”
“For the most part, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter,” Trump remarked. “It’s empty words, and empty words don’t solve war.”
The president claimed that the UN had not reached out to him regarding several wars he says his administration had helped conclude.
While acknowledging the institution’s importance, Trump insisted it must “do more than issue statements” to maintain peace.
His remarks drew a mixed reaction from delegates, with some applauding his call for accountability, while others criticized his combative tone.
