Second cloud seeding trial conducted over Delhi, artificial rain expected soon

The second trial of cloud seeding in Delhi was carried out on Tuesday by a team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur using a Cessna aircraft.

The aircraft entered the national capital from the direction of Meerut and covered several key areas, including Khekra, Burari, North Karol Bagh, and Mayur Vihar.

According to Delhi Minister Majinder Singh Sirsa, eight flares weighing between 2 to 2.5 kilograms each were used in the operation.

These flares released specific chemical agents into the clouds, which had a humidity level of 15–20 percent. The entire process lasted for about 30 minutes, with each flare burning for approximately 2 to 2.5 minutes.

Sirsa said the aim of the exercise was to stimulate artificial rainfall and help reduce pollution levels across the capital region.

Reports suggest that a second round of the cloud seeding operation is expected around 5 p.m., with artificial rain likely to occur in parts of Delhi and its surrounding areas before 7 p.m.

This initiative marks a significant step in Delhi’s ongoing efforts to tackle deteriorating air quality through scientific interventions.
