Cyclone Montha nears Andhra coast, government on high alert

Cyclone Montha continued to advance toward the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday evening, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting that the severe cyclonic storm (SCS) was located about 50 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam and 130 km south of Kakinada as of 4:30 p.m. (IST).

The system was also positioned around 230 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.

According to IMD forecasts, Montha is expected to make landfall near Kakinada late Tuesday night, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall and gusty winds along coastal regions.

Kakinada MP Tangella, who was on the ground in Uppada, told ANI that the state government is fully prepared to tackle the cyclone’s impact.

“Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan have been monitoring the situation for the last two days,” he said.

Disaster response teams have been deployed, and coastal residents are being evacuated to safer locations.
