West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has raised questions over the rapid implementation of the SpecialIntensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in West Bengal, stating that the process is being rushed.
Banerjee pointed out that earlier such revisions took two years or more in the state. However this time the ECI is rushing to finish the process in just a few months, calling it “hasty” and unprecedented.
She criticised the quick timeframe, asking: “Why such hurry to complete it in a month this time?”
She also accused the poll body of targeting her state unfairly, citing alleged procedural issues and the removal of eligible voters.
Mamata’s remarks follow concerns that the SIR exercise may be used for exclusion rather than inclusion of voters.
The Election Commission says the SIR is aimed at updating and cleaning voter rolls ahead of upcoming elections, but in Bengal the announcement has stirred strong political unrest.
