US embassy in India warns against illegal immigration amid H-1B visa delay

The United States Embassy in India on Wednesday issued a strong advisory, warning that individuals who violate US laws will face “significant criminal penalties,” underlining the Donald Trump administration’s firm stance against illegal immigration.

Embassy issues stern warning

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy said the Trump administration is “committed to ending illegal immigration to the United States and protecting our nation’s borders and our citizens.”

The statement comes amid heightened enforcement measures across the US during the first year of President Trump’s second term.

Immigration crackdown intensifies

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said it has stepped up nationwide operations, targeting what it described as the “worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.”

The Department of Homeland Security said ICE has conducted multiple raids throughout the year, arresting undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes.

The aggressive enforcement drive, a key election promise by Trump, has also drawn criticism, with officials facing resistance during some operations.

H-1B visa rules tightened

The advisory coincides with growing concerns among legal migrants. Skilled professionals, including many Indians seeking H-1B visas, are facing long wait times and interview rescheduling.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration introduced a major overhaul of the H-1B programme, replacing the random lottery with a weighted system that favours highly skilled and higher-paid workers, reshaping employment-based immigration to the US.
