Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing it of defaming West Bengal by branding the state as being “full of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis” amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Referring to his interaction with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Banerjee said he questioned how many alleged illegal migrants had actually been removed from the voters’ list, accusing the BJP of shifting blame instead of providing answers.
He asserted that the TMC would intensify its fight and warned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would also raise the issue at the national level.
Banerjee also took aim at the BJP’s promise of turning Bengal into a “Golden State,” questioning why BJP-ruled states such as Bihar, Assam and Tripura had not seen similar transformation.
Citing recent deaths linked to contaminated water in Madhya Pradesh, he said a party that fails to ensure basic needs has no moral right to lecture others.
West Bengal is scheduled to go to Assembly polls in 2026, with political rhetoric intensifying across parties.
