EU urges ‘restraint’, respect for international law in Venezuela

Amid escalating chaos in Venezuela, the European Union (EU) on Saturday, has called for “restraint” and respect for international law.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc has consistently maintained that President Nicolas Maduro “lacks legitimacy” but stressed that any developments must adhere to international law and the UN Charter.

Writing on X after speaking with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Kallas urged all sides to avoid further escalation and prioritise a peaceful transition.

The statement came hours after US President Donald Trump claimed that American forces had captured Maduro during a “large-scale strike” on Venezuela, adding that Maduro’s wife had also been detained and flown out of the country.

Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez later denied the claims, saying the government was unaware of the couple’s whereabouts and demanded proof of life, deepening uncertainty and tensions in the crisis-hit nation.
