Sponsoring terrorism is an expensive affair: HC denies bail to two

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has denied bail to two men accused of smuggling narcotics, arms and explosives from Pakistan through drones to fund terror activities in India. The court refused bail to Gurmukh Singh, son of former Akal Takht Jathedar Jasbir Singh Rode, and Gurmej Singh.

A division bench of Justices Gurvinder Singh Gill and Ramesh Kumari passed the order on December 5, dismissing the appeals filed by the accused after an NIA court in Punjab had earlier rejected their bail pleas.

Observing that sponsoring terrorism is an “expensive affair,” the bench noted that heroin was allegedly smuggled from across the border to generate funds for terrorist activities.

The court said the case reflects a dangerous nexus between narcotics and terrorism, describing it as a form of narco-terrorism.

The bench further observed that money earned from the sale of smuggled drugs was used for terror funding, and that the accused were actively involved in India at the behest of handlers operating from Pakistan.
