Youth lynched in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills, three arrested

Tension arose in parts of Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district after a youth was allegedly lynched by a group of people near an illegal stone quarry in the Rajabala area, prompting swift police action.

Officials said three accused have been arrested following overnight raids, while a manhunt is underway to nab the owners of the illegal quarry, who are suspected to be behind the attack.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the victim, along with members of a local NGO, visited the quarry to verify alleged illegal activities.

While some members managed to escape and alert the police, the youth was found critically injured at the site and later succumbed to his injuries. Another person was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma strongly condemned the “heinous act”, expressed grief over the loss of a young life, and extended condolences to the bereaved family, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
