YSRCP protests at Andhra DGP office over Dalit activist’s murder

Leaders of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Monday staged a protest outside the Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) office after the police denied them permission to submit a complaint over the alleged murder of Dalit activist Manda Salman.

YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy accused leaders of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) of attacking Salman with iron rods, leading to his death when he had gone to visit his ailing wife recently.

The party alleged that police refused to grant an appointment to meet the DGP, forcing its leaders to hold a dharna outside the office. An Additional DGP later received their representation.

The opposition party termed the killing a “government-sponsored murder” and accused the police of failing to register a proper FIR, while allegedly booking a case against the deceased activist himself.

YSRCP leaders claimed that serious crimes against Dalits, women and children were not being registered and alleged political interference in police functioning. The party said it would move the High Court through a public interest litigation and continue its agitation until justice is delivered to Salman’s family.

YSRCP also demanded ₹1 crore compensation for the victim’s family and action against TDP MLA Yarapathineni Srinivas Rao. There was no immediate response from the ruling TDP.
