Sheikh Hasina likely to address supporters through audio message

Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to deliver an audio speech publicly for the first time from New Delhi since leaving Dhaka last year, according to sources.

The address is expected to target the interim Yunus-led government, with Hasina likely to raise concerns over the forthcoming national elections and alleged attacks on minorities and Awami League activists in Bangladesh.

Fled Bangladesh amid unrest

Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024 following weeks of violent student-led protests that triggered widespread political instability across Bangladesh. The unrest paralysed governance and forced her to leave the country as law and order deteriorated.

After her exit, an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus took charge of the country’s functioning.

Death sentence and continuing turmoil

In November 2025, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia. However, she was not extradited and has continued to remain in India.

The situation in Bangladesh worsened further in December 2025 after the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which sparked large-scale riots.

Several reports during the period pointed to incidents of violence against minorities, including members of the Hindu community.

With political tensions still high, Bangladesh is scheduled to hold national elections in February this year.
