Ukraine peace talks end amid deadly Russian airstrike on Kyiv

The two-day trilateral peace talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States concluded on Saturday, just hours after Russia launched an overnight airstrike on Kyiv that killed at least one person and injured four others.

The attack also damaged the city’s power infrastructure, leaving nearly 1.2 million properties without electricity, according to a Reuters report.

Authorities said close to 6,000 buildings in the Ukrainian capital were left without heating as temperatures dropped to around minus 10 degrees Celsius, worsening the humanitarian situation.

The talks, which began on Friday, marked the first direct engagement involving all three sides since the war began. During marathon overnight discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, news agency AP reported.

Moscow reiterated that any peace agreement would require Ukraine to withdraw its forces from eastern regions claimed by Russia but not fully under its control.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had said a potential peace deal was “nearly ready,” speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
