Delhi-NCR air quality plummets ahead of Diwali, Ghaziabad tops list with ‘very poor’ AQI

The air quality across Delhi-NCR deteriorated sharply on Friday, slipping into the ‘very poor’ category just days ahead of Diwali.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 254, while Ghaziabad topped the chart at 306.

Other neighbouring cities such as Noida, Manesar, and Rohtak also reported AQI levels above 270, reflecting worsening pollution levels.

Transport emissions remained the highest contributor, accounting for 18.7% of Delhi’s total pollution, as per the Decision Support System.

Experts have warned that conditions are likely to remain the same over the coming days, with the Air Quality Early Warning System predicting no immediate respite.

The decline marks the end of the capital’s clean air streak that lasted since mid-June, aided by monsoon rains and strong winds.

The seasonal onset of stubble burning and festive activities are expected to further strain air quality.
