India was on Wednesday formally awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad set to stage the quadrennial multi-sport event.
The announcement came after delegates from 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories unanimously ratified India’s bid during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.
Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare said India brings “scale, youth, ambition, rich culture and relevance” to the Games, calling the country a natural fit for the event’s future.
The 2030 edition will mark India’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games, the first being the 2010 Games held in New Delhi.
The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth of Nations, a grouping largely comprising former territories of the British Empire.
Previously, the 2022 Commonwealth Games were hosted by Birmingham while the upcoming edition in 2026 will be hosted in Glasgow.
