Maharashtra government issues gazette to rename Islampur

The Maharashtra government has officially renamed Islampur in Sangli district as Ishwarpur, according to a gazette notification issued by the state.

Along with the town’s new name, the Islampur Nagar Parishad will now be called Urun Ishwarpur Nagar Parishad.

The move follows approval from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which had earlier cleared the state government’s proposal to change the names.

With the notification now issued, the name change will come into effect across official records, administrative documents, and signage.

Renaming towns and local bodies has been a recurring trend in Maharashtra over recent years, as authorities cite cultural and historical reasons for such changes.

The latest decision adds to the growing list of places being rebranded in the state.
