India on Friday said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Iran and has issued multiple advisories for Indian nationals, urging caution and restraint, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Addressing a media briefing, Jaiswal said around 9,000 Indian citizens are currently residing in Iran, the majority of whom are students.
In view of recent developments, the MEA has advised Indian nationals in India not to travel to Iran and asked those currently in the country to leave using whatever means are available.
“We are keeping a close watch on the situation, and as far as our citizens are concerned, we are committed to doing whatever is necessary for their well-being,” he said.
Responding to questions on former US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an additional 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran, Jaiswal said India’s bilateral trade with Iran stands at about $1.6 billion, with exports worth $1.2 billion and imports of $0.4 billion.
With the anti-government protests in Iran spreading like wildfire, the situation in the country remains volatile.
