Kathmandu remains tense after violent protests over the government’s decision to ban major social media platforms left at least 14 people dead. Despite a public curfew, demonstrators vandalised the Parliament gate, earlier today.
The Nepal government had earlier defended the controversial law, stating that only platforms that failed to officially register in the country were banned. While apps that have successfully registered with the government will remain operational, within limits.
Amid growing unrest in the country, sources told NDTV that the government is now likely to revoke the ban. Officials indicated that while regulations on registration will remain in place, a reversal of the sweeping ban could be announced soon to settle public anger.
The protests have sparked a wider debate on freedom of expression and digital rights in Nepal, with citizens demanding access to platforms they call essential for communication and livelihood. .
