Australia was shaken by another deadly shooting on the national day of mourning for the Bondi Beach attack that killed 15 people at a Jewish festival on December 15 last year.
Police said three people including two women and one man were killed in a shooting in New South Wales, while a fourth man was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The suspected gunman was still at large, and authorities said an investigation was underway with a crime scene established.
Emergency services were called to a property in Lake Cargelligo, a rural town of about 1,500 residents, following reports of gunfire.
The incident occurred as flags flew at half mast across the country and millions observed a minute’s silence for victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack. Survivors, families and emergency workers were expected to attend an evening vigil at the Sydney Opera House.
The latest shooting came just days after parliament passed laws to introduce a national gun buyback and strengthen licence background checks.
