Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday criticised the granting of conditional bail to former Uttar Pradesh MLA and Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar, calling it “disappointing and shameful” and questioning the treatment of the survivor.
His remarks came after the survivor was forcefully removed from a protest site at India Gate, where she was demonstrating with her mother against the Delhi High Court order suspending Sengar’s jail term.
In a post on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha asked whether it was the survivor’s “fault” that she had the courage to fight for justice.
He said the victim was being repeatedly harassed and was living under constant fear.
“Bail for rapists and treating survivors like criminals – what kind of justice is this?” Rahul said, adding that suppressing dissent in a democracy was a crime.
The survivor has said she will approach the Supreme Court against the bail order.
