Amid the ongoing controversy regarding Vijay’s latest Tamil film, Jana Nayagan, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP over continued delays.
Gandhi slammed the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) for a delay in clearing Vijay’s latest release, calling it an assault on Tamil culture and free expression.
Gandhi’s remarks came during his visit to poll-bound Tamil Nadu, where the controversy around the Vijay-starrer, widely seen as politically significant, has escalated into a major issue.
In a post on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry was attempting to block the film, asserting that Modi would “never succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people”.
Jana Nayagan, publicised as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry through his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was slated for a Pongal release on January 9 but ran into last-minute hurdles after the CBFC failed to grant certification.
The Madras High Court has since put the film’s release on hold, staying a single-judge order directing the CBFC to clear the movie, leaving its fate uncertain as the legal battle continues.
