In a tragic development, more than a year after the RG Kar rape and murder case, the niece of convicted accused Sanjay Roy was found dead inside a wardrobe at her residence in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, on Sunday.
According to a News18 report, the girl, a sixth-standard student, was rushed to Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Neighbours recall disturbance
Local residents told police that frequent quarrels were heard from the house. On the day of the incident, the girl’s stepmother had gone out to buy crackers for Diwali.
Upon returning, she received no response from the girl and eventually found her lifeless body inside a cupboard. Police were immediately informed.
Murder or suicide?
While preliminary investigation by Kolkata Police suggests suicide, officers have not ruled out the possibility of murder.
A case of unnatural death has been registered, and further inquiry is underway.
Background on Sanjay Roy case
Sanjay Roy, the girl’s uncle, was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2025 for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in August 2024.
The case, initially probed by Kolkata Police, was later handed over to the CBI following nationwide outrage and judicial intervention.
