The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday ordered the immediate suspension of Tarn Taran senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr Ravjot Kaur Grewal, just days ahead of the crucial assembly by-election scheduled for November 11.Â
Amritsar commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has been given the additional charge of Tarn Taran SSP, according to an official directive from the poll panel.
The suspension came after Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal lodged a formal complaint with the ECI-appointed observer, alleging that the SSP had been misusing her authority to benefit the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab.
A SAD delegation also met the state’s chief electoral officer in Chandigarh, accusing the government of using the police to influence the election process.
In their memorandum, SAD leaders claimed that several party workers and candidate Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa’s family members were being harassed and detained by police officials.
The Tarn Taran assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
Voting for the bypoll will be held on November 11, with counting scheduled for November 14.
