On Monday, Thailand launched fresh air strikes on Cambodia, killing one Thai soldier and injuring several others.
The Thai military said the strikes were carried out after its troops reportedly came under Cambodian fire, accusing Phnom Penh of violating the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement signed in October.
Confirming the air strikes, Cambodia mentioned it has not retaliated, adding that its forces were “exercising restraint” while monitoring the situation. Thousands of civilians were evacuated from villages on both sides as fears of a renewed conflict escalated.
The fragile peace deal brokered by US President Donald Trump earlier this year and expanded in October has now effectively collapsed, raising concerns of a prolonged confrontation in the long-disputed border region.
