Trump’s fresh claim on India–Pak truce clashes with his Oct remark

In a recent development, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that he forced a halt to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan by threatening to impose a 350% tariff on both countries.

While addressing a U.S.-Saudi investment forum, on Thursday, Trump said he warned the nuclear-armed nations that he would end all trade with them unless they stopped the war, adding he was “all set” to go ahead with the tariff unless they agreed to a deal.

Trump also repeated that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called him to “thank him” for “saving millions of lives,” and claimed to have received a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who told him: “We’re done … we’re not going to war.”

These latest remarks contradict an earlier statement by Trump in October, when he said the tariff threat had been around 200 percent, not 350 percent.

While Pakistan has repeatedly praised Trump for his role in brokering what he calls a ceasefire, New Delhi has consistently rejected any third-party mediation, maintaining the May 2025 truce was achieved through direct military-level talks.
