UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the United States-led proposal to bring a ceasefire and lasting peace in Gaza.
His spokesperson said on Tuesday that Guterres views the plan, announced by US President Donald Trump, as a step toward ending the violence and easing civilian suffering.
The UN chief reiterated his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, humanitarian access across Gaza, and the unconditional release of hostages.
He stressed the crucial role of Arab and Muslim nations in the peace process and urged all parties to commit to the agreement and its implementation.
What the Gaza peace plan proposes
Unveiled after talks between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the plan seeks to transform Gaza into a deradicalised, terror-free zone.
It calls for redevelopment to improve conditions for Palestinians, Israeli withdrawal to pre-agreed lines, suspension of military operations, and preparations for hostage releases.
Muslim nations back proposal
Eight Arab and Muslim countries issued a joint statement welcoming Trump’s plan, saying it could end the two-year conflict and prevent further displacement of Palestinians.
They expressed hope it could also pave the way for a two-state solution.
The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the peace plan translates into lasting stability for the region.
