Actor-turned-politician Vijay has issued his first statement following the tragic stampede in Karur during his rally that left at least 41 people dead and hundreds injured.
Describing it as the most painful experience of his life, Vijay said, “Only pain in my heart. The only reason why people come to see me on this tour is the love and affection they have for me. I am always indebted to that.”
Vijay stressed that public safety had always been his priority and claimed he had requested police authorities to identify secure venues for his rallies.
“But what should not have happened has happened. I am also a human being. All of us are affected at this time,” he said, adding that he has been visiting hospitals and hoping for the recovery of the injured.
Expressing gratitude to political leaders, party members and supporters who stood by him, Vijay urged the state government not to target his followers.
Rejecting allegations of wrongdoing, he said his political journey would continue “even stronger” despite the tragedy.
The Karur stampede has sparked widespread criticism and investigations into crowd management at political events.
