As India is all set to face current World Test Champions South Africa at Eden Gardens from Friday, pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee assured that the surface will offer “something for everybody.”
Mukherjee’s remarks came after long discussion with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill, who reportedly demanded clarity on the nature of the pitch for the first test match.
The discussions between the team management and Mukherjee were quick to grab public attention after reports claimed that the Indian side was unhappy with the surface at Eden Gardens.
However, Mukherjee dismissed any controversy, stating that the discussion was limited to understanding the team’s pitch preferences.
“The pitch will be good – a sporting wicket. As the days progress, there will be turn and bounce,” he told India Today. “Like any home team, India asked for a bit of turn, not too much.”
This Test marks Eden Gardens’ return to hosting red-ball cricket for the first time since the historic 2019 pink-ball game.
The venue’s recent Ranji Trophy matches have seen slower tracks, offering little to pacers, a factor that could influence India’s team composition for the much-anticipated clash.
