In a dramatic turn of events, Rohini Acharya, the daughter who once saved Lalu Prasad Yadav’s life by donating her kidney, has now announced that she is quitting politics and “disowning” her family.
Her statement, posted on X on Saturday, came just a day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan suffered a crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections, slipping to around to less than 50 seats.
Party sources say Rohini was deeply upset with internal pressures and political blame being shifted onto her following the loss.
Rohini, a doctor based in Singapore, had emerged as one of Lalu’s strongest pillars of support over the years.
Her emotional bond with her father became national news in 2022 when she underwent surgery to donate a kidney to him, a gesture that touched the hearts of many.
Rohini’s decision to now step away from both politics and her family has therefore sent shockwaves across Bihar’s political circles.
Her exit comes months after another major rupture within the family.
Earlier this year, Lalu’s elder son Tej Pratap Yadav was expelled from both the RJD and the family following a controversy over a social media post.
He later floated his own outfit, the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD), and contested from Mahua, finishing a distant third.
