Rahman calls for peace, unity in Bangladesh, quotes Luther King

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday urged citizens to prioritise peace and stability as he addressed a rally in Dhaka following his return from exile after 17 years.

Speaking at the 300 Feet area in Purbachal, Rahman said safeguarding peace and dignity must remain the foremost goal for all Bangladeshis.

“Be it men, women or children, upholding peace should always be our first priority. We will work together to build our desired Bangladesh,” he told the gathering.

Invoking civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Rahman said he had a vision for the country’s future, drawing a parallel with the iconic “I have a dream” speech.

His remarks came at a crucial moment, with Bangladesh witnessing unrest following the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi last week.

Rahman, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is widely seen as a strong contender in the February 2026 general elections.
