India slams Switzerland at UNHRC, calls remarks ‘ill-informed’

India strongly rebutted Switzerland’s comments at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), where the European nation had urged New Delhi to protect minorities and uphold freedom of expression and media rights.

Responding firmly, Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi dismissed the remarks as “surprising, shallow, and ill-informed,” asserting that such narratives do not reflect the ground reality in India.

Speaking in Geneva, Tyagi reaffirmed India’s position as the world’s largest and most diverse democracy with a deep-rooted tradition of pluralism. He noted that Switzerland, currently holding the UNHRC presidency, should avoid wasting the Council’s time with unfounded claims and instead address its own pressing challenges.

“Switzerland should focus on its own issues such as racism, systematic discrimination, and xenophobia. India, with its civilizational embrace of pluralism, remains ready to help Switzerland deal with these concerns,” Tyagi stated.

The sharp response reflects India’s growing assertiveness on the global stage, pushing back against external criticism while reiterating its democratic credentials.
